Schedule and Scientific Program

Saturday, April 21, 2012

7:00 am - 8:00 am
Continental Breakfast and Registration

8:00 am - 8:30 am
Welcome and Instruction

8:30 am - 9:30 am
Novel Methods and Materials utilized for alveolar ridge augmentation
Barry Levin, DMD
This presentation will demonstrate novel techniques and material that can help regeneration of viable bone in the desired implant locations, and provide long-term maintenance of this hard and soft tissue.  The procedure should minimize graft resorption as well as surgical morbidity.  Newer, bio-absorbable materials that can make this process less invasive and successful will be discussed.

9:30 am - 10:30 am
Bone Regeneration using Human Allografts
Hom-Lay Wang, DDS, MSD, PhD
This presentation will discuss all current available human allograft and provide rationales and a "decision tree" that will assist clinicians choose the most predictable material and/or procedure for bone augmentation.  Techniques used to perform guided bone regeneration (i.e., sandwich bone augmentation) and allogenic only graft will be illustrated

10:30 am - 11:00 am
Break and Refreshments

11:00 am - 12:00 pm
The Bone Sets the Tone, but what about the Tissue?
Bach Le, DDS, MD
This evidence-based discussion will include the latest techniques in esthetic site development of the compromised implant site.

12:00 pm - 12:30 pm
Q & A

12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
Lunch

1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
The Use of rh-BMP-2 alone in Ridge Augmentation and Socket Preservation
Edgard El Chaar, DDS, MS
Most of the grafting materials until recently provided a bone regeneration via osteoconduction except for the autogenous bone which is considered the golden standard by its osteogenesis properties. This presentation will discuss how rh-BMP-2, a growth factor, that has the ability to provide osteoinductivity, is now available for use in our day-by-day practice.  It enhances bone regeneration for both socket preservation techniques and augmentation of deficient ridges, especially in a vertical direction.

2:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Indications & Expectations concerning recombinant growth factors & platelet rich plasma
James L. Rutkowski, DMD, PhD
During this presentation, the current status of the recombinant growth factors BMP2 and PDGF-BB and autogenous growth factors obtained from platelet rich plasma will be reviewed.  Clinical case reports and evidence-based literature concerning these bone growth modifying agents will be presented in a balanced format.  Dr. Rutkowski will also provide an algorithm to assist the clinician in making informed decisions regarding the use of these agents.

3:30 pm - 4:00 pm
Q & A

7:30 am - 8:30 am
Continental Breakfast

8:30 am - 9:30 am
Developing Appropriate Treatment Algorithms for Augmentation of the Posterior Maxillary
Paul Fugazzotto, DDS
While there is no doubt that Caldwell-Luc sinus augmentation therapy is highly predictable, simpler less traumatic options are often indicated for appropriate augmentation of the posterior maxilla, either at the time of implant placement or in anticipation of eventual implant insertion.  The challenge to the conscious clinician is to determine which treatment approach is most appropriate for a given clinical situation, to develop the necessary treatment algorithms, and to work within the framework of a rigid definition of success, to ensure the maximization of treatment outcomes.

9:30 am - 10:30 am
BMP2 Mechanism of Action and its Role in the Scheme of Contemporary Bone Engineering
Daniel Spagnoli, DDS, PhD
This presentation will review the cellular interactions of BMP that contribute to stem cell chemotaxis, and osteoblast differentiation.  It will also discuss BMP Interactions that couple VEGF to neovascularization and the importance of changes in tissue oxygen tension during denovo bone formation.  The program will also address the role of internal and external constructs, and the role of cell attachment on differentiation and expression of phenotype.

10:30 am - 11:00 am
Break and Refreshments

11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Alveolar Ridge Regenerative Strategies: Autogenous Bone vs Tissue Engineering
Michael A. Pikos, DDS
This clinically based presentation will compare the use of autogenous bone and tissue engineering protocols including the use of PRGF, rh-PDGF and rhBMP-2 for alveolar ridge augmentation.  The science, indications, advantages and disadvantages of each approach will be featured.  Single tooth to full arch reconstruction cases will be covered.

12:00 pm - 12:30 pm
Q & A

12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
Lunch

1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Utilizing Preshaped Collagen Membranes to Treat Ridge Deficiencies
John Minichetti, DMD
Clinicians often encounter implant surgical sites with insufficient horizontal and/or vertical dimension.  This program is designed for the moderate/advanced level implant dentist wishing to learn about newer innovations and techniques in ridge augmentation.  Participants will learn the diagnosis of edentulous area deficiencies, review standard augmentation choices and be introduced to newer augmentation materials and techniques, including the CurV (R) membrane.
