Immediate Function Dental Implants Have Excellent Success Rates
LAS VEGAS, Oct. 21, 2011 – Published studies and clinical experience have shown that dental implants can be successfully placed and loaded immediately with a crown or denture to restore normal dental function. The one-stage procedure allows for immediate function, requires fewer surgical interventions, shorter treatment time and less trauma for patients, according to research findings reported at the annual scientific meeting of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, www.aaid.com.
Jack A. Hahn, DDS, Cosmetic and Implant Dental Center of Cincinnati, spoke in a plenary session and reported that for more than 40 years he has been placing immediate load implants and many are still functioning today. “The benefit of immediate function for patients is they leave with stable teeth at the first surgical appointment,” said Hahn. “From a practice marketing perspective, it creates a ‘wow’ effect that can generate more referrals. Implications for patients considering dental implants are significant because of the time-saving convenience, lower cost, and ability for patients to eat and chew normally immediately following the procedure.”
Hahn said newer dental implants designed with tapered aggressive threads and rough surfaces are simple to place and offer more convenient restorative options. He added that advances in imaging technologies also have made immediate load implants more predictable. “With cone beam radiography and computerized treatment planning we can predetermine implant positioning according to the desired prosthesis and bone quality,” he explained.
Immediate loading also can be utilized in emergency situations, Hahn noted. “When someone presents with a fractured or non-restorable anterior tooth, the choice usually is to extract the remaining tooth fragment and replace with an implant the same day.”
Earlier this year, in article published in the Journal of Oral Implantology, Hahn prospectively evaluated the treatment outcomes of 47 one-piece dental implants placed in 30 patients after four years of normal function and loading. The 47 implants had survival rate of 97.9 percent with stable bone levels after four years. No serious adverse events were reported. The results showed that one-piece oxidized surfaced dental implants can be used for immediate function.
