Honoring Dr. O. Hilt Tatum, Jr.

For more than four decades, Dr. Hilt Tatum was a foundational force in implant dentistry, revolutionizing treatments for the posterior maxilla, atrophic ridge, and compromised implant sites.

Dr. Tatum firmly believed that a restorative dentist’s ultimate goal is to return patients to normal contour, comfort, health, function, and esthetics. He dedicated his career to helping others achieve that exact standard through relentless clinical innovation, disciplined education, and long-term biological thinking.

Pioneering Contributions

Dr. Tatum’s groundbreaking advancements fundamentally changed the field. His landmark contributions include:

  • The NIRISAB Philosophy: Natural Implant Restoration in Stable Alveolar Bone.

  • Surgical Techniques: Sinus lift and graft procedures, bone expansion and manipulation, and inferior alveolar nerve lateralization.

  • Grafting Innovations: Autogenous bone grafting with remote incision techniques, and vascularized osteotomy with interpositional grafting.

  • Implant Design: Two-stage titanium root-form implant systems.

Beyond his clinical brilliance, Dr. Tatum was a gifted and devoted educator. He delivered over 2,000 presentations worldwide, held faculty appointments in both the United States and France, and trained thousands of clinicians through the Tatum Institute and the AAID MaxiCourse® system. In 2003, his immense contributions to the healing sciences were globally recognized when he was named a Chevalier (Knight) of the French Legion of Honor.
